Biography
Lan-Da Van (S'98-M'02-SM16) received the B.S. (Honors) and the M.S. degree from Tatung Institute of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan, in 1995 and 1997, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from National Taiwan University (NTU), Taipei, Taiwan, in 2001, all in electrical engineering. From 2001 to 2006, he was an Associate Researcher at National Chip Implementation Center (CIC), Hsinchu, Taiwan. Since Feb. 2006, he joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science, National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Hsinchu, Taiwan, where he was a Professor. Since Feb. 2021, he joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Taiwan, where he is currently a Professor. From 2018, he served as the Associate Director of M2M/IoT R&D Center (College Level Research Center), NYCU. From 2021, he serves as the Director of M2M/IoT R&D Center, NYCU. From 2021, he serves as the Associate Chief Director of Microelectronics and Information Research Center (MIRC) (First Level Research Center), NYCU. His research interests are intelligent/VLSI algorithms, architectures, chips, systems, and applications for digital signal processing and adaptive/machine leaning computation. This includes the design of low-power/high-performance/cost-effective adaptive filter, computer arithmetic, independent component analysis (ICA), multi-dimensional filter, transform, 3-D graphics system, intelligent elevator system, and UAV and wearable data fusion system. He has published 80 journal and conference papers in these areas.

Dr. Van was a recipient of the Chunghwa Picture Tube (CPT) and Motorola Fellowships in 1995 and 1997, respectively. In 2005, he received the Best Poster Award in the iNEER Conference for Engineering Education and Research (iCEER 2005). In 2014, he received the Best Paper Award in the IEEE International Conference on Internet of Things (iThings 2014). He was a recipient of the Teaching Award of the Computer Science College, National Chiao Tung University in 2014. Dr. Van served as Chairman of the IEEE NTU Student Branch in 2000. In 2001, he has received the IEEE Award for outstanding leadership and service to the IEEE NTU Student Branch. From 2009 to 2010, he served as an Officer of the IEEE Taipei Section. In 2014, he was a Track Co-Chair of the 22nd IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI-SoC 2014). In 2016, he was a Program Co-Chair of the NCTU Forum of Technology and Application of Internet of Things. He was a Technical Track Co-Chair of the IEEE International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS 2018), a Special Session Co-Chair of the IEEE International Conference on DSP (DSP 2018). In 2019, he served as an Area Co-Chair and a Best Paper Award Committee Member of the IEEE International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Circuits and Systems (AICAS 2019), and Publicity Co-Chair of the 32nd IEEE International System-on-Chip Conference (SOCC 2019). In 2020, he served as an Area Co-Chair and a Best Paper Selection Committee Member of the IEEE International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Circuits and Systems (AICAS 2020), a Tutorial Co-Chair of the 33rd IEEE International System-on-Chip Conference (SOCC 2020), and a Technical Program Committee Co-Chair of the 16th IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS 2020). In 2021, he served as a Special Session Co-Chair of the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2021), a Tutorial Co-Chair of the 34th IEEE International System-on-Chip Conference (SOCC 2021), a Special Session Co-Chair of the 18th International SoC Design Conference (ISOCC 2021), an international steering committee member of the 17th IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS 2021), and a Track Chair of the 14th IEEE International Symposium on Embedded Multicore/Many-core Systems-on-Chip (MCSoC 2021). In 2022, he serves as a Special Session Co-Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Circuits and Systems (AICAS 2022), a Technical Program Committee Co-Chair of the 19th International SoC Design Conference (ISOCC 2022), and a Program Co-Chair of the 15th IEEE International Symposium on Embedded Multicore/Many-core Systems-on-Chip (MCSoC 2022). He serves as a Chair-Elect/Secretary of the IEEE CASS VLSI Systems and Applications Technical Committee (VSA-TC) (2022 ~ Present). Dr. Van served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Computers (2014~2018), IEEE Access (2018 ~ 2022), and Journal of Medical Imaging and Health Informatics (2014 ~ 2017), and a Board Members of the Journal of Medical Imaging and Health Informatics (2017 ~ 2021), and has been serving as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing (2022 ~ Present) and ACM Computing Surveys (2020 ~ Present). He is a Higher Education Academy (HEA) Fellow.

Emerging Topics in Computing的副編輯(Associate Editor, 2022~Present)、ACM Computing Surveys的副編輯(Associate Editor, 2020~Present)、IEEE Access期刊的副編輯(Associate Editor, 2018~2022)、IEEE Trans. on Computers的副編輯(Associate Editor, 2014~2018),以上均是資訊電機領域頂尖期刊;同時擔任Journal of Medical Imaging and Health Informatics(JMIHI)期刊的副編輯(Associate Editor, 2014~2017)及擔任JMIHI期刊的Board Member(2018~2021)。范博士在2021年獲選為Higher Education Academy (HEA) Fellow。范博士曾指導學生獲得許多物聯網相關競賽獎項,如:榮獲經濟部工業局-2018通訊大賽-智慧聯網創新應用競賽-佳作、榮獲經濟部工業局-2016通訊大賽-聯發科技物聯網開發競賽-佳作、榮獲財團法人國家實驗研究院-國家晶片系統設計中心(CIC) 2016 MorSensor無線感測積木創意應用設計競賽-銀牌、榮獲2015年經濟部商業司:「穿戴」起不可思議的未來-104年度展示科技創意分享校園工作坊競賽-第二名、榮獲2014年英特爾智慧系統設計學生競賽-冠軍。范博士主要代表性之研究成果包含:(1)首先開發快速獨立成分分析(Fast Independent Component Analysis)的架構與晶片,其運算系統可以兼顧成本與達到即時並應用在腦電波處理上,並發表在IEEE Trans. on Neural Networks國際期刊上及以口頭報告發表在國際頂尖會議IEEE ICASSP會議上;(2)首先開發通用型低誤差固定寬度乘法器(Fixed-width Multiplier),並發表在IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers與IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing國際期刊,其論文各自被引用次數超過140;(3)開發心律式陣列適應數位濾波器(Adaptive Digital Filter),其論文被引用次數超過100;(4)首先開發高性能與低成本漸進式光子映射(Progressive Photon Mapping)相關的架構與晶片,並發表在IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers國際期刊上;(5)首先融合無人機視訊及穿戴式裝置資料應用於人員識別,並以Demo Paper形式發表在國際頂尖會議ACM MobiCom會議上;(6)首先投入智慧物聯網電梯排程系統,並發表在IEEE Systems Journal與IEEE Access國際期刊上;(7)首先使用多支Kinects,提出一個可行的交換(Handover)技術,以達到大範圍的偵測並應用在人體姿態辨識上,並獲得IEEE iThings最佳論文獎。在協助產業發展方面,范博士2022年獲得群聯電子股份有限公司-『應用於控制 SSD行為之AI Garbage Collection與Cache Policy預測器研究』研究計畫補助並擔任主持人,其總經費為新台幣220萬元。2020年獲得永大機電工業股份有限公司-『電梯影像AI 智能偵測辨識系統研究』研究計畫補助並擔任主持人,其總經費為新台幣220萬元。2019年獲得中鼎工程股份有限公司-『智能科技協助建造場域管理之開發研究』研究計畫補助並擔任主持人,其總經費為新台幣260萬元。2018年獲得中鼎工程股份有限公司-『智能化裝置於建造工地管理之開發研究』研究計畫補助並擔任主持人,其總經費為新台幣220萬元。2017年獲得中鼎工程股份有限公司-『智慧感測科技應用於工地管理之研究』研究計畫補助並擔任主持人,其總經費為新台幣280萬元。2010年獲得華碩電腦股份有限公司-『異質雲端平台之應用服務』研究計畫補助並擔任主持人,其總經費為新台幣174萬元。
